The world's eight species of bears are in desperate need of psychic support and healing energy. Six of the eight species are perched on the brink of extinction due to human activities related to habitat loss and illegal trafficking and trade of bears and their body parts.

We burn and clear forests for personal gain. When bears search for food because they can no longer find it in destroyed habitat, we call them nuisances and cry out in fear, “bear-human conflict!” and then kill the hungry bear. We kill the babies too.

But sometimes we don’t, and then the orphaned cubs live in terror and agony trying to survive. Unless rescued through an act of humanity, the orphaned cubs eventually succumb to slow painful deaths through starvation. Others freeze to death without the warmth of their mother, and others, while roaming fruitlessly in search of a dead mother, become prey for other large animals.

Other people poach bears for the benefit they gain from the lucrative black market that supports our penchant for Asian medicines and desire for “food delicacies” and foolish entertainment. We kill bears for “sport” and hunt them down as “trophies” to strip them of their skin. We consume excessive amounts of energy, an action that melts polar ice caps -- the one and only habitat for polar bears.

And in the process of satisfying our insatiable appetite for self-indulgence, we reduce the one thing on Earth that sustains us all: biodiversity.

Please help the bears through your actions, thoughts, prayers and meditative practices. They need our intervention if they are to survive. The tourists take the illegal products home to Korea at the end of their visit, violating international law.

ENV is working to shut the operation down. In the meantime, ENV is also educating Koreans about their complicity in these crimes against wildlife. ENV has contacted Korean Airlines to warn customers before they arrive in Vietnam, and the group is targeting hotels where Korean tourists stay in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, providing Korean language warnings and encouraging tourists to avoid bear farms during their visit. In Hanoi, the Melia, Fortuna, and Sheraton hotels are displaying advisories for their clients.

As ENV targets tourists with warnings, they say, "We remain hopeful that the Quang Ninh provincial government will take appropriate steps to end the illegal activities at bear farms in their province, and preserve the sanctity of Ha Long Bay as a World Heritage Site from the shadow of illegal bear farms just down the road."

More than 4000 bears are currently registered as being on bear bile farms in Vietnam. The Forest Protection Department has a plan to phase out bear farming by preventing new bears from ending up on farms, punishing violators and confiscating bears from farmers that are caught breaking the law. In practice, however, few bears are confiscated and farmers receive a slap on the wrist at best, and return to violating the law.

A small handful of countries have banned the use of wild animals in circuses, but the Bolivian ban includes domestic animals as well, making the new law in Bolivia the dawning of a brand new day. The law took effect July 1.

The law was proposed after an undercover investigation by the nonprofit London-based group Animal Defenders International (ADI) found widespread abuse in circuses operating in Bolivia. The group's undercover investigators in Bolivia worked side-by-side with circus workers and other animal welfare groups to film disturbing mistreatment of the animals.

Rep. Ximena Flores sponsored the bill to enact the law after seeing the video footage. The law she enacted states that the use of animals in circuses "constitutes an act of cruelty." The law sets fines for infractions and allows for animals to be confiscated by authorities. Circus operators have a year to comply to the new law.

Flores said authorities are now working to prevent circus operators from killing animals they can no longer use. About 50 animals are circulating in national and international circuses at the moment in Bolivia.

ADI chief executive Jan Creamer said circus animals suffer everywhere, including in wealthy countries such as The United States.
Bear cubs rescued in Vietnam

Animals Asia's Vietnam bear sanctuary has two new residents: tiny twin Moon Bear cubs. Following a tip-off, the Environmental Police raided an old bile farm on Sunday, which used to have bears. They confiscated the cubs, and the cubs are now in the care of Animals Asia. The itty bitty babes -- Maggie and Damo -- received immediate veterinary care at Animals Asia and are reported to be in good health.

According to Animals Asia's bear manager, "Maggie is very shy and laps milk from her bowl, clearing up every last drop very quickly. Damo is very energetic and plays rough, and he won’t lap from a bowl, preferring to take his milk from a bottle.”

Successful rescue missions are the focal point of animal welfare work, but they aren't possible without donor support. It costs $9,000 a year for Animals Asia to medically treat a rescued bear and feed, rehabilitate and keep her in good health. The cubs need sponsors, like so many other rescued bears at the sanctuary. Please support UFP's Earth Day Bear Sponsorship drive and donate today. All donation sizes are vital to the continuation of rescuing moon bears from lives of unending torture and pain. Donations are tax deductible in Hong Kong, Australia, UK, Germany and USA. Eco Warriors Undercover: Bear bile farming
By Jeanette McDermott

As many as 10,000 Asiatic black bears in China are locked in cages the size of their own bodies, and their bile is drained through an excruciatingly painful procedure and sold for use in traditional medicine. So they can approach the bears without fear of injury, the farmers often mutilate the bears by breaking their teeth and pulling out their claws, sometimes brutally removing whole digits.

Milking and selling the bile is not the farmers' only source of profit from the bears. Some farmers amputate one or two paws from live bears to sell to restaurants. When bears are no longer able to secrete bile, they are left to die from sickness or starvation. Bears perceive terror and despair and feel pain the same as we do, and they endure this torture for up to 25 years. Try to imagine it.

Many of the bears in bile farms are captured illegally in the wild as cubs. Poachers wait until the mother leaves the den in search of food to capture new-born cubs. Sometimes she is killed to get the babies. Other times cubs are born in captivity from pregnant bears that were poached from the wild. In either case, the bear cubs rarely survive the ordeal. Any surviving cubs are removed from their mothers too early and put into cages, where they sometimes grow into the bars as their bodies mature.

The bears show their distress and suffering by banging their heads against the cage bars, gnawing on the bars, and at times tearing the flesh from their paws and arms in a futile attempt to deflect their thoughts from the main source of pain. The sores bleed, resulting in further serious infection. The bears are usually milked twice a day, before feeding, when more bile is produced. They moan and writhe in pain and clutch their stomachs as the bile drains from their bodies. Sometimes the bears try to pull out the catheters. Those that do, are immobilized in an iron corset. Under-nourished and highly stressed from horrific pain and unnatural confinement, the bears lie in agony, in their own filth.

This is Willow. He was 10 years old when he arrived at the Animals Asia sanctuary in 2004. He died last year from a massive liver tumor -- a result of his treatment on the bile farm.

"Bear bile farming is the worst animal welfare scenario I have ever encountered," said Swiss born conservation media activist Karl Ammann.

Amman has been named by Time magazine and CNN as a "Hero of the Environment." He is credited with almost single-handedly raising awareness about the issue of bush meat, the slaughter and consumption of wild -- and often protected -- animals. He has reported on and photographed the likes of hog-tied crocodiles, charbroiled monkeys and severed gorilla heads draining into saucepans, but these don’t compare to bear bile farming he says. Read more.
