Creating Space - Another Benefit of Meditation

Creating Space to Receive

WORD FOR THE DAY(gratefulness.org)
Wednesday, Jan. 6

Everything comes to us
that belongs to us if we
create the capacity to
receive it.

Rabindranath Tagore

Nature abhorring a void?

Great quote... and especially meaningful for me today... as I prepare for the silence of a sattipattana (vipassana meditation) retreat I'm leaving for tomorrow. I'm going to 'create capacity.'

I've noticed a pattern of the most unique and meaningful experiences occurring following these retreats into silent meditation. Perhaps by letting go of the busyness, I am creating capacity or space for that which truly belongs to me

Neuroplasticity – The Rewiring of the Brain Through Meditation
Ron Alexander

Paul Therow, the great travel writer, authored The Iron Rooster This is about traveling by train from Siberia through China ending up in Tibet. He writes about the happiness the Tibetan people, despite being under the military control of China. He noted that it must be because “they pray all the time.”
His Holiness The Dalai Lama wrote the book The Universe in a Single Atom. Here he wrote about the difficult decision to have his monks wired up to study their brain function while meditating. “However I felt very strongly (and still do feel) that the application of science to understanding the consciousness of meditators is most important. …I argued that they should undergo the experiments out of altruism: if the good effects of quieting the mind and cultivating wholesome mental states can be demonstrated scientifically, this may have beneficial results for others..."
In Buddha’s Brain: The Practice of Neuroscience of Happiness, a neuropsychologist Rick Hanson has joined with Richard Mendino in writing about neuroplasticity and rewiring the brain through meditation. “You don’t need an EEG or a Ph.D. to observe your experience and the world to become a happier and kinder person.”
The Dalai Lama also writes that what is left out of Western Science is the subjective experience. Indeed, personally speaking, Vipassana meditation helps me to be more balanced, more joyful, more peaceful and as a great side effect – healthier.

Dr. Paul Fleischman is brilliant and I really got alot out of his lecture on Science and Vipassana. I took alot of notes and will write a synopsis of his talk in next few days. He has a poetry book aptly named You Can Never Speak Up Too Often for the Love of All Things., and I proudly own a copy.
I asked him afterwards about his writing a book based on "Science and Vipassana" and disappointedly, he said that would be "about three years from now."
This man is the real deal, and I very much enjoyed sitting under his guidance.
May all Beings be Happy and Free, ron

(Another plug for equanimity - see Jeanne's excellent response above)

harmony in this world of
seeming discord.

I added this to "equanimity dialogue" above: In addition, the way Goenka talks about equanimity, I think it means the same as "mindfulness" in other forms of Buddhism?
And to the "The Buddha and Modern Science", I added that I am sure I will be adding more here after sitting and listening to Dr. Fleishman's this coming weekend." Thank you for replying to both "discussions", Jeanne.

Dr. Mike, It was good to experience... pain? Sounds a little S&M-y. LOL

Thanks, Ron... Yes I know about Dr. Fleischman... which is why I was green with envy that he was doing a talk in your neighborhood. I searched, but could not find a speaking itinerary for him.

I just signed up for a special 10-day OS course from the 11th to the 22nd at Dhamma Kunja. ...looking forward to that.

Actually I missed the one day course, which was the week prior. However, there are sittings each Sunday mornings down the street from me. I went to day for that. I was good to hear Goenka again, and experience the pain of sitting again with others. HA!
