We, the Mothers & Women of the World stand together beside many others who care about our future.
As Mothers we must protect our children and grandchildren, and must speak for them now.
We insist that a system of protection and support be put into place that addresses the health and welfare for ALL future generations.
Oil spills have no borders; the Gulf spill will reach many countries.
The Oceans and waterways are our source of food, our health, our inspiration and survival; they are for all of us to enjoy and benefit from.
Since the Gulf oil spill disaster struck, we have all watched in mouth dropping horror, sadness and grief as the oil continues to gush into our
beautiful ocean. We know enormous damage continues with serious and
multiple consequences that will last long into the future.
We are witnessing the enormous loss of birds, dolphins, manatee, tuna, and marine life that is being devastated along with countless numbers of wildlife that will suffer and die.
The impact of this event is beyond our ability to fully comprehend.
Our immediate response has been blame, finger pointing, and understandable anger, along with lawsuits, and the listing of criminal acts. To date there has been very little positive action.
The company that is responsible for this disaster is now in charge of it’s own clean up very little oversight.
Dumbfounded, we sit back as BP continues to infuse our waters with toxic dispersants; an outrageous act, with insider benefit.
The dispersant Corexit 9500& 9527A is banned in England because of the toxic effects on humans, marine life, and the precious eco-system!
Now there are two problems, oil and toxic dispersants.
Available right now there are several bioremediation methods successfully tested and used for oil spill clean up, that are environmentally safe, human safe, and wildlife safe.
Profit has clouded our ability to make wise decisions.
Whether you have billions in your pockets or almost nothing, you will still breathe the same air and eat the same food. It is an interdependent world we are living in.
This is a moment in history where we have an opportunity to learn how to take action together as a World community to solve this heart wrenching and blatantly neglectful environmental disaster.
The coast guard has finally asked for World assistance. Why hasn’t BP? Why hasn’t the American Government, or ANY other Government?
It is time for a drastic paradigm shift in our thinking and problem solving.
It is time for all of us to handle this crisis with cooperation, intelligence and determination!
“Business as usual” is killing the systems that support all life.
IMPERATIVE AND IMMEDIATE ACTION
1. We demand that BP STOP pouring Corexit and ALL toxic
chemicals into our Oceans NOW.
2. An
international moratorium on all offshore drilling and exploration must be implemented until stringent safety requirements are
mandated. Existing rigs must be retested for
safety and retrofitted as needed to meet new standards.
3. A
committee comprised of international oil company experts, engineers and related
fields to partake in the design and installation
of the current repair with independent oversight.
4. Remove financial limits and fine limits on all man made disasters.
SOLUTIONS & OPTIMAL SCENARIOS
Effective Action
Create an International Global Response team, fully funded by 4% of all oil company’s profits
worldwide. This team will be independent of all government agencies. Any additional funding must be
independent with NO conflict of interest or financial gain.
The following would be included in the 4% fee:
1. Two (2) locations for stations of emergency response, one in each hemisphere.
2. A team responsible for rehabilitation of all past oil spills, and all related damage to habitats regardless of size and impact.
3. Clean up and rehabilitation centers with trained staff for cleanup of all
animals involved in oil spills. This includes permanent housing for all wildlife and people as
needed.
4. Full compensation in equal proportion for losses of home and livelihood,
human displacement, loss of work, and health issues directly linked to oil exposure from
spills. All related health issues would be covered
with no limitations.
5. Research, development and implementation of new and existing alternative energy systems including the “Carbon Fee Dividend Act of 2010” and no funding nonrenewable fossil fuels.
6. ALL deepwater drilling must be banned until it has been deemed appropriate by an independent, international study verifying the safety and efficacy of all drilling procedures.
7. No country shall be allowed to ship any garbage, hazardous waste or toxic refuse to any other country for any reason.
8. New international laws shall be written regarding any dumping in the oceans or any body of water. Such laws shall
apply to all ocean traffic (cargo
ships, ocean liners and
recreational
vehicles) or any other organizations or individuals.
9. No more oil, coal, or nuclear construction shall be allowed in, or near delicate, natural
habitats and eco-systems anywhere in the
world without an approved environmental study.
