I just listened to some very beautiful music from Mali on Link TV's World Music program. I can't figure out who it was by or where to buy it though.

Van Halen right now. I was just handed a cd by a local rap group, called "Ill Tribe." I'll be checlking them out at lunch. I listen to everything, except opera and musicals. I love music by people like TOOL, The Mars Volta, Mudvayne, Santana, A Perfect Circle, B.B. King, Murder By Death, Queens of the Stone Age, etc. I could go on and on, but the list would take up this page, and others need to share their music.

Wonderful to hear that there are some people discovering the beautiful sounds of Africa - I too have become a great fan of the sounds of Africa (Since that is where I am from)
There are numerous names that I can give you to connect you with the music from Mali - these you can go "google" or go to your music store and go and find under "world music"

Some of the most well know artist from Mali (those with recordings) are:
~* Habib Koite (he has a very distinctive sound - and plays what we fondly call desert-blues)
~* Afel Bocoum
~* Peuls
~* The Kel Tamashek
~* Sonrai
~* Bambara
~* Manding

Most of these artists uses some of the Traditional instruments like the Tinde and Teharde, which provides this unique Mali music sound.
And then there is the Tuareg, Women Ensemble "Tartit" from Timbaktu (Tuareg being one of the cultures from Mali)
So this is a nice place to start looking for the music, and then there is just the matter of preferance to which you like - of course!
The first Mali music I ever heard, that got me interested, was the Traditional Unison Tuareg song, as sung by the Woman from Essakene in Mali!
And from there a whole new world of sound opened up for me!

GlobalNomad thank you for all the great information on the music of Mali. Do you have a favorite Malian CD you could recommend?

The piece I heard last night was called Happy something but I did not understand the last word of the title because it was in an African language. The word might have started with a Q. The group's name started with a B and might have sounded like Biltani. The music was so beautiful and upbeat I would love to find that CD some how as well.

Malian music is trully good. I have lived in Mali for three years when I was younger and can tell you all that people there where really friendly, and I think it is reflected in it's music. Malian music is to me much more structured, so maybe easier to listen, than other african music. I love african music, but i really enjoy 60's and 70's rock, Hendrix, Santana, Led zep, Genesis (with P Gabriel), the beatles and it keeps going on...

I've been listening to Gerry Rafferty and the Grateful Dead a lot lately. I've been in a classic rock kind of mood. I have some packing to do today though so I think I'll switch over to Buena Vista Social Club. I subscribed to xm radio just so I could hear it on my computer they have a great 40's music channel that I love listening to. My taste is pretty eclectic and you can never be sure of what you'll hear in my house from one minute to the next.
