THE MOST POWERFUL SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD WAS ON THE VERY TOP OF MAUNA KEA IN HAWAII ON THE "BIG ISLAND" IN HILO. IT HAS THE LARGEST TELESCOPE TO SEARCH THE STARS, GALAXIES, AND UNIVERSES IN THE WORLD. THAT IS WHERE I WAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is something incredibly powerful about the energy flowing off of ALL mountains - but especially Shasta and Mt. Agung - you're so right about that! And thanks for the tantalizing information about the desert island - but given the fact that you map covers like 5,000+ square miles, I think it's location will continue to be a secret. ;-)

The Balinese mountain was lined with very diversely beautifully designed temples all the way to the top, and there were many priests available to anoint your 3rd eye with ashes, as you climbed & stopped to pray. This is a really deep subject. Are there places that in and of themselves are special? If so why? Someone builds a church and people start attending services in the church. 4 or 5 generations later people say what a wonderful spiritual place it is.
My question is as follow: Was there something special about the location that the people who decided to build the church felt when they were looking for a place to build the church or did it become special because of the many services and families with ties to the church? Before buildings, Native Americans and others held mountains, lakes, and other natural locations as sacred. I tend to think that almost any place can be spiritual to at least one person.
I have a lake in Pennsylvania that I feel is very special. I doubt I could convince many of the local people that it is spiritual. I think it is because when I go there I get thoughts that cause me to think or rethink how I am spending my life.

Hi Deborah - thanks for posting.

Here's my take on it: I think there's a constant flow of energy to/from the Earth that we all respond to in varying ways and to varying degrees. When that energy is very powerful, or palpable, place of worship spring up. At first it was probably just a small shrine or pile of stones (for instance).

Over time a tradition develops and structures are enlarged, etc. And this is a practice I've encountered all over the planet - so I think it speaks to a deep and important truth of our existence. In many places we're responding to the inherent energy of the land, to the traditions of the place and to the accumulated vibratory patterns that the structure itself holds from years of worship, intention, meditation and prayer.

In the ancient world these structures were often built using a kind of "spiritual technology" that's essentially lost to us - in harmony with the Earth, sky, sun and stars and expressive of the invisible forces of the divine in such a way that they resonate with our minds and act as amplifiers of energy and intention.

The Ancient Egyptian, just as one example, used a highly advanced form of geomancy and dowsing when choosing and laying out sites - and their temples were often built with profound solar, stellar alignment encoded into them.

There is a tiny chapel in New Mexico at a place called Chimayo. It is a place of pilgrimage. I last went there as a child. My brother had asthma and my grandmother said that miracles happen there. My older cousin had polio (they say) and he wore hip and leg braces for many years of his childhood. Grandma took him to Chimayo against his mother's objections to such superstition. Well my cousin later discarded his leg braces and hip supports. His mother never liked to discuss it. As for my older brother...grandma convinced my mom to take him to Chimayo also. We traveled from California to New Mexico to Chimayo. To my knowledge he has never again suffered from asthma It's been at least 40 years. My mother took some sacred "Earth'' with us in a tiny glass container. This was allowed back then. I don't know what ever came of that red Earth.
I don't know of any more "family miracles". I don't know why people travel to Chimayo other than the word of mouth stories that are passed down. I have a longing to go back. I am not currently ill. I just consider Chimayo to be a sacred place. Apparently others agree. Has anyone else ever traveled there? Are there more "miracles" attributed to Chimayo?

I have just returned from a ten day Vispassana Meditation Retreat - possibly the best thing I have ever done...check out "The Dhamma Brothers" documentary (and I am sure you have!). It is a fairly new center down in Georgia, these Onederful Vispassana Meditators are making a paradise out of a hot marshy Southern rural area. and it is going well, and I expect to help getting it into prison system here in S.C.
There is no more of a sacred place than where an ancient hatred has been turned into a present love. (ACIM)
