VW "TDI" diesels are mostly Jettas but there is a popular new "sportswagen", and a new small SUV with the same great 4 cylinder engine. The price will depend on th extras, of course, but I think the basic Jetta TDI goes for about 22000, However, unlike the more expensive Prius hybrids, the TDI is eligible for a $1300 fed. tax credit. My friend purchased a roomier sportswagen with everything which costs about 29,000. I don't know the price of the SUV, but it is a good looking car. Another great thing about the TDI's is how they hold their value. There is 2006 Jetta TDI for $19,900. If you compare prices for equivalent gasoline used VW's, the diesels are about 50% higher.
thanks for asking, Ron
The Jetta TDI schockingly became the first non-hybrid to win the Green Car of the Year, & there were some tough judges - Jay Leno, the CEO of the Sierra Club, the CEO of Earth First, The CEO of the Environmental Defense Fund, Michael Costeau of Ocean Futures, along with editors of the Green Car Magazine

Sorry about all the caps, and the baby turtles need all the protection they can get. There is a large group of volunteers, and I am honored to be one of them.
Today, was a day for the Green Car of the Year. I talked one of my wealthier friends to buy a new VW TDI diesel - The Green Car of the Year! Yes! I can't afford a new one, but I have my bids into a 2003 TDI, which I may be able to afford? - next step - biodiesel! TDI is Turbo Direct Injection - a great engine!

Waties Island Sea Turtle Monitors 2009
Waties Island is a 2.5 mile private undeveloped barrier island at the border of North and South Carolina. Under a permit from SC Department of Natural Resources to help protect a fading treasure, the sea turtle, we are at it again this season! The site will be updated often, so please feel free to bookmark us and visit us again to see what's new!

First Nest!!!!!

YEA! I FEEL VERY GRATEFUL FOR THIS FIRST NEST! TWO YEARS AGO WE PROTECTED 54 NESTS AND PROTECTED 1, 459 BABY TURTLES WHEN THEY CAME OUT OF THE NEST AND SCURRIED TO THE WATER.
LAST YEAR THE UNIVERSITY SHUT DOWN THE PROGRAM WHEN A HURRICANE WIPED OUT ALL THE NEST SITES. SOME OF US WERE DISAPPOINTED ESPECIALLY WHEN WE FOUND ONE NEST SITE REMAINING THAT HAD BEEN DUG UP BY THE FOXES, WHICH ATE THE EGGS.
A beautiful morning on Waties!!! Just past marker 9 a crawl is found. A call is put into Barb and Steve. Looks like we have a nest! Steve does the probing. Looks good! Gloves are passed out and we dig. We find an egg very close to the surface. We stop and cover the nest up. Much needs to be done now. Measurements are taken of the tracks. The center of the nest is marked. The digging for the cage starts. Meanwhile, Barb and Steve set the poles marking the nesting site and take the measurements and GPS readings. The cage is set to protect the nest from predators and backfilled. After all is done we head home. It was a wonderful way to start the day!!!

Yes, "twisted thinking" is right (& way to the right also). Instead of science, they use political fictional science. I did write a letter with my opposing point of view, that did contain the facts.

How anybody can want Obama and the Green Movement to fail is beyond me? greenlove, ron

Who is the newspaper going to blame for global warming? Their thinking seems twisted. Going green often creates new jobs. The car companies did themselves in and only have their selves to blame. I think having a President for 8 years tied into the oil biz did not help either. Al Gore believe it or not has ties to oil or at least use to.

There is an opinion this morning in our local newspaper, that going green is what caused our automotive companies to fail.
I think the opposite is true. Toyota got the first hybrid out years ago. Our manufacturers specialized in gas hog SUVs until the supply and demand caught up with them.
But the primary reason is that our car makers did not go the diesel route for autoa that Europe has blazed the path on - over 52 % of their vehicles are diesel, and now with Ultralow Sulfur Clean Diesel and biodiesel, the green car of the year is the VW TDI Jetta. Hybrid people were shocked, but the VW proved to be much cleaner, just as efficient, and more affordable. I wish it was U.S. car I was writing about but not producing diesel-run vehicles was a majoy blunder.
By the way, I am going to send in this to the editorial page.

I am thankful to live near one of the last uninhabited islands left on the East Coast - Waites Island. I call it the "Isle of Light". On my page., I have a map, that shows the "New River" Inlet. (Actually Little River Inlet), near the "N" of "New" is a white area that is surrounded by water, that is the Isle of Light! It is the best place for protection of Loggerhead Turtle Nests (see photos on my page), because there is no lights to confuse the baby turtles when they "boil" emerge from the nests. Also, Coastal Carolina U. has 1/3 of island for Marine Research, and lead us volunteers in protecting the nests. The island is in S.C., but N.C. is close to the inlet. i promote biodiesel which would clear the ocean of the toxic effects of fossil fuels. And I am thankful, that this adminstration support these greening efforts. This year they were selling leases for offshore windmills, while just last year, politicians were trying to sell leases for oil wells. Matt, on top of the nest of large turtle we called "Barnacle Betty", is a commercial fisherman, who knows that green efforts will help cleanse the ocean which is good for fish, turtles, porpoises, whales and his children's future.
