A DOCTOR'S PRESCRIPTION FOR HUGGING:

"How important are hugging and physical and emotional contact for people affected by life - threatening illnesses? In my work, I have found that people who receive nurturing maintain a better outlook on their situation -- and historically, positive attitude is an important factor in long-term survival. Hugging and physical contact make a difference in a person's frame of mind, and may help their medical condition. Best of all, hugging has no side effects and does not require a trip to the doctor.

My initial draw to service came after my mother died. I threw on a backpack and went to Costa Rica for a couple of weeks to wander and think about her, about us, about our life together. During my journey I met a young man who between semesters of college had founded an international volunteer organization in Nicaragua. He was so focused and so passionate at his young age of 26 that I was immediately drawn to the energy and his level of service and commitment to a cause. I thought a lot about this and how fortunate I have been in my life, how 'cared for' by the universe and people around me even when I had no parents as guides. Upon my return home I decided to make a move, and emailed him to inquire about volunteer opportunities. The organization at that point was focused on education projects and had built one school in a barrio where none existed before, in a place where the children went to work as soon as they were able, and seldom went to school. I saw a need for a health aspect of the organization as well, since so many go without medical care as well as education, one thing led to another and I now I am actively involved in building clinics and bringing medical personnel to Nicaragua and to those most in need. My heart sings when I realize the impact that we have on the lives of others, when I look into their eyes, when I see them lined up by the dozens, waiting to see a doctor. I see this healing of my fellow humans but a small part of the larger healing taking place on the planet and am honored to take part at this level, while continuing to work in the light on other levels. ~namaste

We can be drawn in service to unconditional Love in so many ways. Some of us connect consciously with the Life of the being, Gaia, who ensouls our planetary home. Some of us simply love the earth and want the best for her. We acknowledge her boundless love for us and if we dare, perhaps we notice the presence of an opportunity, an opportunity to experience healing in even larger spheres of existence. We find that others share as well a burden that is recognized within us in subtlety, as heartfelt feeling welling up and surfacing at last in our awareness as a desire to be of real assistance to all that surrounds us. The bodies which we as human spirit inhabit are a part of her body and so it is that we can feel what our environment feels - if we are open to that. We value the contribution of so many who devote themselves to ecological pursuits in support of the various kingdoms upon this earth – those that work tirelessly in the environmental conservation movements as well as those who endeavor promoting human welfare. We honor this and yet we are drawn to a different sort of service. It is our willingness to acknowledge the reality of spirit and our openness to working at that level which brings us together. As we have experienced inner healing within our individual selves, so we feel to assist in harmonizing the body of our planet. The same fear that we continue to discover and heal within us can be found within the various kingdoms of the earth. And so it is that we are drawn together in sacred service to energetically harmonize the various levels of form that share with us our planetary home. We invite you this Sunday, if you feel so guided, to join us in spiritual service to the health and well being of our beloved planet.
