The ultimate expression of love is to love others as we love ourselves. This is difficult to achieve, because while Divine love is perfect, it is channeled through the lens of the human heart. We question the possibility of a pure and altruistic love because we are uncomfortable with the personal sacrifices we imagine. The answer, however, is simple: you can only learn to love another as yourself when you truly learn to love yourself, and that is only possible when you accept God's love.
