Event Description

THIRD ANNUAL BATON ROUGE WORLD PEACE DAY

The Third Annual Baton Rouge World Peace Day will be held September 22, 2012 at Beauvior Park, 2834 Greenwood Drive (under the Perkins Road overpass) Baton Rouge, LA 70808. This festival-style free event will run from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm.

While a festival atmosphere with music, food, dancing, and art, "this event is rooted in a community yoga practice which is part of a larger global yoga effort to bring awareness to the United Nation’s International Peace Day," said Beth Zagurski, founder of Red Stick Peacemakers and coordinator for the event. The practice, or "yoga mala," will be led by area yoga instructors and anyone is invited to join in regardless of skill or level. Local merchants and food vendors, including food trucks will also be on hand. Spontaneous Combustion will perform while artists, inspired by the music, will produce works to be raffled. Baton Rouge Belly dancers will perform. There will be children’s activities, including yoga, storytelling, and arts and crafts.

Concurrent with the events at Beauvior Park, massage, Thai Yoga Bodywork, and healing touch will be offered at The Healing Sanctuary, located at One Heart Yoga Center at Tres Bien, 2935 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70808.

Charity partners for the event are the Adopt-a-Senior Program through the Baton Rouge Food Bank, and Braveheart, a care program for children transitioning to foster care. Proceeds from fundraising, vendor fees, sponsorship, or donations will be donated to both these programs. Area non-profit organizations will also be highlighted at the event.

Participating yoga studios include: Agame Yoga and Meditation Center, Blue Lotus Wellness, Inc., Karmady, One Heart Yoga Center at Tres Bien, and Yoga Bliss. The American Holistic Nurses Association is also participating. Currently, sponsors of the event include Beth’s Boot Camp, Green Frog Music, Coyote Moon, Pinetta’s European Restaurant, and Loft 3H. Participating vendors include Blue Lotus Wellness, Inc., Noelie Harmon, local jewelers, artists, and Heifer International. Food vendors include Magpie Café, Taco de Paco, and Southern Dawgs sno-cones.

"The past two year’s events have been unique to the Baton Rouge area," said Zagurski. "With all the excitement and support we are receiving from local merchants, vendors, studios, and agencies, we are confident this year’s event will be quite successful – and surpass the past two years in our fund raising efforts," she said.

Global Mala for Peace was founded by Shiva Rea, a renowned Los Angeles-based yoga instructor. This year marks the sixth year of the global event.
