Great idea. In the UK, there have been projects on "waste" ground, which is usually around an industrial plot that has fallen into disuse. Locating the owners can often be a mission but, technically, the owner is legally responsible for any land they own and can be enforced to maintain it to an acceptable level (although this is rarely the case). Usually, owners are amenable to their land being used for community garden projects as it means the land is being maintained for them while it remains vacant.

The advantage of this is that anyone and everyone can get involved. This includes people who we may think twice about having in our own yard. Strangers become friends, people who live in flats (apartments) have access to land to grow vegetables etc. Are there similar projects in the US?
