Dear Roshanna, as i read your message through again, what i am experiencing is the knowledge that is incorporated with Tai Chi, Qigong and Kundalini Yoga practices. Practices that enable one in managing the "chi" or life energy of the body/mind. And these practices (movements) have been studied and refined over a period of 3,000 years or more so that they bring out the best in all who practice these arts. Being involved in these healing modalities becomes a "way of life" if taken seriously. And that they are effective in maintaining right and left brain balance may be attested to by the fact that it is prohibited to do Qigong now in China so powerful are these exercises.

Whereas the Eastern way has a great deal of contrast with what Westerners do as exercise, with much of it based in competition, e.g., football, baseball, basketball, and other type of marathons, and certainly not coordinated to serve the whole body/mind system as are the martial art forms which are always so graceful and never hurried or jerky as are those associated with competitive sports which serve as "exercise" for so many in our Western schools. The Eastern movements seem also to parallel those of the Native Americans as well.

Aren't reading and oral story-telling just ways each of us share in other's experiences? For instance, my telling of my time as a homeless person? Bruce Lipton's telling of his experiences as a scientist exploring the biology of a cell?, or Peter Kater's telling through his fingertips the way he hears music? Certainly it is not the same as experiencing these activities for oneself, but isn't it possible to learn from someone else's experience through their telling of it to others?

For example here, i am able to read Jeanne's paragraph beginning with "Regarding simple. . . and understand that the conscious mind processes information at only about 20 million bits per second whereas the sub-conscious mind is processing it much, much faster. Therefore the sub-conscious mind is always attempting to take over from the conscious mind, which is why it is so difficult for the mind to concentrate on the breath. This is information i gained from Bruce Lipton, but can extrapolate it to create a better understanding of Jeanne's words.

While i am very much opposed to "teaching" in schools, and feel that hands-on experiential training is a more authentic way of acquiring information, isn't some experience-sharing necessary? Would it be possible for each of us to learn what we need to know if experience-sharing were not part of the process?

Absolutely, Jeanne, and that's why what I speak of is alive, it is not verbiage, not filler. LIke you, I'm athletic, I test what I think and allow my intuitive bodymind to bring me solutions that are uniquely designed for who I am, not for who others may or may not be. Nonetheless, there are core principles that drive and direct evolution.
If an athlete is reading while exercising they are not involved in the exercise and miss the benefits it offers including vital messages about timing, alignment, flow, pacing, transformation from moment to moment. I often say that people take their bodies out for exercise with the same enthusiasm they drop clothes off at the cleaners and pick it back up a couple hours later. Why do we 'work out'? Why 'exhaust' ourselves physical rather than engage the recycling and re-energizing that happens when you allow the body to do what it does best, at its own pace.
I've discovered that during running I hit various plateaus of speed. I can actually fall behind my innate speed and doing so I fall out of aligment. Far more energy arrives when I line up with my internal pace, and move when it tells me to as opposed to a time clock or coach. When I allow myself to pick it up because my body asks me to not only is my speed improved but so is my coordination, breath/heart rate, and I can coordinate phenomenon with far greater ease.
I think too much 'learning' rather than experiencing and testing dumbs us down and makes us lethargic. It keeps us caged in and highly limited. Science has, however, made radical shifts in awareness of how the body truly works as a unit and in doing so radically alters every persons capacity to access, harness and perform at peak capacity "if they really want to"...and if are willing to learn the vocabulary and discipline their whole being. It is a growth curve, a natural growth/evolutionary curve that continues all our lives...even when we thrive we are still expanding our potentials.
Thank you so much for bringing this to the forefront of discussion. It is critical to acknowledge if we are to create an organic and ecological shift in how people perceive themselves and one other as well as how we ultimately express that authenticity to earthe a grassroots change that will be globally effective.
It begins within!

Great comment, Roshanna... you have such a way with words.

Regarding simple... Simple does not mean easy... even very advanced meditators are hard pressed to maintain concentration on their breath for even one minute... before their monkey mind starts distracting them with thoughts, feelings, emotions and senses. Sounds really simple... observing the breath, but it is no small feat... and is only a prelude to deep meditation... the place where the mind/body connection blurs into oneness.

I was an avid runner for 20 years... but never found a need to read runner's books. Reading is a different exercise than running.

Similarly... reading academic accounts of scientific observations of the mind-body connection is not the same as directly experiencing them. During the past century, western science has had a field day plagiarizing eastern mysticism, applying scientific terminology and then calling it their own.

While its good to bring knowledge to a broader base of people, the recitation of empirical knowledge is no substitute for experiential knowledge in the realm of consciousness. However, if in the reading of others intellectual interests regarding the marriage of eastern mysticism and quantum physics, someone's personal journey to increased consciousness is stimulated, its value is immeasurable.
There are many paths toward home...

It would be great to allow the homeless to share what they think of being homeless. Great to get their authentic points of view here and I imagine there are a huge number of differing opinions out there regarding the issue of a values-based homelessness. We need to remember that a hand-embroidered linen tablecloth isn't practical out in the woods, too much idealism get in the way of useful grass roots action.
Mary Rose, loved your last comment but it isn't the knowing that creates the effect, knowing only sets the stage for the potential to be harnessed AND utilized. This is my field, my love, my playground and I assure you that a daily exercise of even the most simple awareness floods us with enormous energy and innovation.
For example, when you, or anyone who reads this, is walking or futzing around the house, be aware of your ankles, be aware of their pivotal motion and when you are sensing them fully, and joyfully, your feet naturally soften, the soles begin to feel and hear and embrace the earth, and that's only one of the millions of shifts taking place in your body....thanks to the fact that you are allowing the ankle to do what it knows, and with such depth and completeness and total commitment to sustaining you in the gravitational field....and the more you stay focused on the ankle the more intelligence it will show you, the breadth of its intelligence is infinite to our thought-mind but relatively finite to our living-mind and its knowledge base can be directed and applied to a myriad of other possibilities.
And there is never complaint! Ah....now there is an example of a world system that works!

Mitch, it quite probably is this simple. However, i personally like to know what the ingredients are and the roles they play in creating human consciousness. I am interested in knowing that the electromagnetic energy field underlies all of life and that at the moment of conception with a seed the electromagnetic field appears and surrounds it. I like knowing how the two hemispheres of my brain when entrained and connected with my heart brain bring about the holographic mind/brain. I like knowing how my heart beat sets up a signatory vibration for my being. It is also interesting to know how my heart connects with the earth's vibration through toric energy fields which also connect me to the universe itself. I like knowing that when i reach out and touch someone, i am creating "molecules of emotion" in my heart and brain called oxytocin, and that these molecules are what give me the feelings associated with love. I like the power of knowing how these things work, and the realization that i can turn my emotions on and off at will. I like knowing that if i want to be, i am in charge of me. I like knowing that there is no "ghost in the machine," that it is all me. But, if i want to run on auto-pilot, i can do that also as long as my sub-conscious mind is programmed in a healthy manner. Much more to this, but you get the gist. .

Mary Rose:

I believe I fully understand what you are talking about. I believe people can be taught this - really simply - just like baking a pie.

Your take the following ingredients: namely the 15 sense model that we have enunciated - mixing it with an understanding of the four processes for a transformation to occur - just a contemplation of these pie - is like putting the ideas into an oven - and every one can bake it to their own taste, texture, and sensibility. the key as you point out - is the notion of "remembering" - if you do not remember to turn on the stove - nothing will happen.

remember what it is you are doing - and your intention - and the rest is easy.

Yes, the Christopher Reeves story is moving, and much thanks to Rosh for posting it, but what is more important to know about and understand the biology of human consciousness so that I am able to manage the subtle energy vibrations of the body/mind, in such a way as to create "mir-I-calls" in my life everyday. And, to know that this ability lays within each and every one of us. We only need begin the process of re-member-ing the "who of we are," first as individuals and then as a collective conscious/unconscious, to accomplish this as an "ordinary" event in our lives.

Roshanna, I was deeply moved by the Christopher Reeves story. It reflects a true spirit of healing.
